MC Borough Installs New Police Officers at Council Meeting
MOUNT CARMEL — Borough council unanimously approved the hiring of two new patrolmen to the Mount Carmel Borough Police Department and then installed them at its monthly meeting Thursday evening. Jason Berger and Tyler Herbster were installed as new members of the MCPD by Mayor Philip “Bing” Cimino.
In other business, Ordinance 2018-03 which prohibits the harboring of an animal nuisance, with exceptions and penalties was approved, along with an advertisement for bids on the sale of its 2009 Chevrolet L 4500 20-passenger bus and the payment of KPI Engineering invoices for the Market Street Hill project and 119 S. Locust St. demolition.
A motion to raise the local Occupational Privilege Tax from $10 to $52 was rejected by a vote of 3 to 2. Council members Robert Barrett, Leroy Moser Jr. and Robert Shirmer voted no, with Charmagne Cimino and Ed Fegley voting yes.
Mayor Cimino also said that donations to repair the Christmas sleigh that Santa Claus uses are needed. “We’re looking for donations in the amount of $275 from each of the communities which Santa visits, Shamokin, Kulpmont and Mount Carmel, in order to make the necessary repairs and I believe it’s for a good cause,” said Cimino.
Cimino also added that he and Shamokin Mayor John Brown will make a formal gentleman’s wager over the upcoming Coal Bucket game in the amount of $100 to be officially announced Saturday morning. The proceeds will go toward the winner’s Public Library fund.
“We’re gonna crush them like nothin’,” said Barrett, adding, “It’s not even gonna be a game.”
